Edo State House of Assembly passes a Bill for a Law For A.A.U


The Edo House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to provide for the Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, Special Intervention Powers for visitor to the University. 

The passage was sequel to the consideration of the bill as requested by governor Godwin Obaseki.

The governor had in a request letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government requested the house to consider and pass the bill. 

The motion to resolve into the committee of the whole to consider the bill was moved by the Majority leader, Mr. Henry Okhuarobo who also called for suspension of house rules 27, 42 to 48 to consider the bill and was seconded by the deputy speaker,  Mr Roland Asoro. 

Moving the motion, Okhuarobo said the bill seeks to empower the visitor to intervene in the administration of the University. 

At the clause by clause consideration, the bill conferred powers on the visitor to intervene in the administration of the University should the school management fail and unable to direct the affairs of the institution. 

The bill also confers on the visitor powers to suspend any or all substantive principal officer(s) of the University from office for a period covered by the special intervention. 

The visitor of the institution is also empowered to set a special intervention team comprising experts to manage the affairs of the university during the period of the special intervention. 

Also in the bill, the visitor has the powers to appoint interim principal officers for the day to day management of the University.

According to the bill, the visitor shall approve all financial expenditures over and above the approval limit of the special intervention team.

Consequently,  the bill was given its third reading by the clerk of the house, Alhaji Yahaya Omogbai. 

The speaker,  Marcus Onobun thereafter directed that clean copies of the bill be sent to the governor for his accent.
