“One of our major problems in this community are mosquitoes, I hope they will stop tormenting us after this program,” said Mrs Osas from Ugbegun.
This was just one response from the recent National Malaria Elimination and Sensitization Project carried out by the Ambrose Alli University Medical Students Association (AAUMSA) led by the Campus Director, Victory Ifeanyichuwu Uzoma on the 24th of April 2021 in Ugbegun, Esan central LGA. Edo State.
To commemorate the world malaria day, 58 volunteers from the Ambrose Alli University Medical Student Association embarked on an outreach Tagged: NIMSA Goes Home , the goal of the community event and program was to sensitize rural area dwellers about malaria, including how to prevent it and how to eliminate the problem, and to generate demand and use of malaria prevention tools, such as bed nets, testing and treatment. To achieve this, project volunteers:
•Provided information, education and communication materials (IEC) to community residents
•Distributed long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) to members of the communities.
Results
•The outreach attracted about 150 attendees in Ugbegun.
•50 LLITNs were distributed to the community.
•Medical check up like blood pressure, heart and lung sound and temperature was checked by the National Malaria Elimination and Sensitization Project - AAU (NMESP-AAU) medical team.
•Items like soaps were distributed to help the community keep their environment mosquito free. Food items and snacks were also distributed to children in the community.
The event ended with a vote of thanks from the Campus Director of the Malaria Elimination Project, AAU as well as from the matron of the primary health care center, Ugbegun.
