Russian side Zenit St Petersburg have appointed Roberto
Mancini as the first team manager on a three-year deal
with an option of a further two-year extension.
The 52-year-old Italian becomes another elite name to join
the club management after Dick Advocaat, Luciano Spalletti
and André Villas-Boas.
Mancini’s trophy laden coaching career began in 2000
when he became an assistant to Sven-Göran Eriksson at
Lazio before moving to Fiorentina where he helped the club
win the Coppa Italia in his first season as full-time
manager. He then returned to Lazio and help them win the
Coppa Italia. In 2004, Mancini was appointed the manager
of Inter Milan and it was here that his most successful spell
took place. Under his leadership, the Nerazzurris won the
Serie A title thrice in a row, while also winning the Coppa
Italia twice and the Supercoppa Italiana.
Mancini then went on to join Manchester City in 2009. In his
first full season, he led City to a FA Cup trophy, their first in
35 years. Three years later, in May 2012, City won the
Premier League title for the first time and it was the club’s
first league title since 1968. A few months later, Mancini
won his third English trophy in the F.A. Community Shield.
From 2013 to 2016 he managed Galatasaray and Inter
Milan respectively, winning the National Cup with the
Turkish side.
Mancini’s appointment comes after Zenit sacked manager
Mircea Lucescu last week after the club finished 3rd in the
Russian Premier League and thus failed to qualify for the
Champions League for the second succesive season.
